Spending time as a tourist in Morocco means that you might be spoilt for choice when it comes to visiting attractions. There are plenty to choose from and if you want to experience life as it is here then definitely add a few of these to your schedule.
The centre of life in Marrakech is Djemaa el Fna. This is a public square that spring to life at night when musicians, acrobats, snake charmers and storytellers all perform here. There are hundreds of food stalls here so you can also enjoy some dinner while you watch the spectacle unfold. This cultural event has been taking place for centuries. For something a little more peaceful is the Jardin Majorelle. This garden dates back to the 1920s and was designed by a French artist. Yves Saint Laurent purchased the garden 60 years later and restored it, filling it with palm trees, cacti and bamboo.
A trip between Marrakech and Fez means that you have the opportunity to pull your hire car over for a while and see the Cascades d’Ouzoud. These waterfalls are actually a popular stopping point on this road, where visitors can stock up on clean and clear spring water. Alternatively take a trip into the Sahara. You can take a camel trek to one of the nomadic settlements and visit the impressive sand dunes of Erg Chebbi.
The city of Fez was once the centre of learning and power in Morocco. The impressive mosques feature heavily on the skyline and you can spend a few hours at the Dar Batha Museum. The medina here has been UNESCO-listed as a World Heritage Site and is worth a visit.
Point your hire car in the direction of the Atlantic Coast. You can spend a day or two at Asilah, a small whitewashed town close to a number of good beaches or go to Agadir for a few western luxuries as well as a great beach. Parts of the coast are also given over to national parks and you can make the most of these unspoiled landscapes by hiking through them.
A trip to the souks is a must when you are visiting Morocco. Marrakech souk is widely considered to be the heart of the city and it is busy and chaotic. You can find almost anything that you want here from spices to fabrics and you must remember that haggling is almost compulsory!
