A trip to Montenegro at the moment means that you get to see some of the best attractions before it starts to attract hundreds of thousands of tourists. Here are just a few that you could consider adding to your schedule.
A trip to Kotor is a must for anyone interested in how life used to be here. This is a bustling port town and is fortified. It has been listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and includes excellent examples of Venetian architecture as well as a clock tower that dates back to the 17th century. The cathedral can trace its history back to the 12th century and there is a naval museum that is ideal for history enthusiasts.
Visitors who want to explore the coast as well as inland can charter a private yacht. The Bay of Kotor has some dramatic scenery and there are plenty of tiny fishing villages along the coast for you to see and visit. The floating islands of Perast can be found in the bay. You can see the two islets, each with a church and they are easily visited by boat.
Take a trip to Sveti Sfetan. This is a stone village that dates back to medieval times and is linked to Montenegro’s coastline by a causeway. It is now a luxury resort and the hotel here has been given a five star rating. If you have opted to hire a car in Montenegro then you will need to leave it behind if you want to visit Budva. The streets here are cobbled alleys with buildings that date back to the Venetian period. There are some modern buildings close to the beach but much of the town hasn’t changed for centuries.
Europe does not have many jungles but one of them can be found at the Biogradska Gora National Park. It covers more than 13,000 acres and you can spend a little time spotting eagles and other wildlife. Alternatively you can head for the cliffs between Danilovgrad and Niksic. There is a monastery here that was built into the side of the cliff back in the 17th century and which is still home to the remains of the founder.
Be careful with your hire car if you want to visit a winery or two! The Plantaze Winery is the largest producer of wines in the country and you can pick up a few bottles to take home as souvenirs.
