Even though Mongolia is not one of the top tourist destinations in the world there are still plenty of attractions. You will never be bored on a trip here!
A trip to Amarbayasgalant Monastery is perfect for those who want to see some great architecture. Not many of the country’s monasteries actually survived Stalin’s rule but this one is in the beautiful and peaceful location of Selenge Aimag. You can stay in the region in tent accommodation. If you want to see some of the other monasteries then try Gandan in the capital and Erdene Zuu.
Bird watchers often make the trip here because Mongolia officially has 429 different species of bird here. Try the lakes in the western part of the country such as Khar Us Nuur. You can spend a little time camping in the area – you are free to camp almost anywhere you like. The Tavan Bogd National Park and the Khovsgol National Park are some of the best places to camp.
During the winter months you can take part in cross-country skiing. The steppes of the country see a lot of snow. Terelj National Park is popular for this activity but you need to bring along your own skiing equipment as much of the hire equipment is not great quality.
Consider using hire car services to take a trip to the birthplace of Ghengis Khan. This region has pretty lakes, mountains and streams and is almost as it was when Khan lived eight centuries ago. You can find out about the traditional side of life here by arranging to stay in a yurt. You can reside with a nomad family, enjoy local dishes and help with daily tasks such as sheep herding. If you do this take along a gift for your hosts.
Getting around in rural areas is very different than in other countries. You can swap your rental car for horses. You can go on a trek with a tour company and even if you are new to this you can arrange to take lessons in Mongolia.
The National Museum of Mongolia is located in the capital and is home to some of the best archaeological finds from the country. However, it is not the only museum in the capital. The Zanabazar Museum of Buddhist Art is here as well as the Natural History Museum. If you visit the regional capitals you will also find small museums that are worth a visit.
