The main industry in Mauritania is not tourism, but the country is now seeing growing numbers of visitors. There are some traditional tourist attractions but many of the interesting features of the country relate to its customs and the traditional way of life.
Use local car rental services to take a trip to Atâr. This is the capital of the Adrar area of the country and it is an oasis town. It was an important city on the salt caravan route. There is an old quarter of the town and it is still a good market place for the nomads that inhabit the northern part of the country.
The coastline of Mauritania is virtually just one very long beach. However, it is a great place for bird watchers. Much of the inland areas of the country is desert. Why not hire a 4x4 and drive along the beach and explore a little of the desert? You can also do a little bird watching at the Banc d’Arguin where the desert meets the ocean and where there are several islands. The islands are home to a number of interesting archaeological sites and you can arrange a trip to see the ruins there.
Your hire car in Mauritania can also help you to visit towns like Nouâdhibou, a port town. This is the main port for the fishing industry here and there are markets here along with a ship graveyard. The Atlantic coastline is beautiful and there are plenty of places along the coast where you can go swimming, fishing or surfing. Be careful exploring the beaches near Nouâdhibou though as there is the possibility of landmines in the region.
The city of Nouakchott was founded fairly recently in 1960 but there is a strong sense of tradition here. The Berber architecture style has been used throughout the city. There are several markets here that are worth the trip as well as the craft centre, a carpet factory that you can visit and the cultural centre where you can learn more about the traditions of the country.
If you have an interest in the history of the country then a visit to Oualata is a must. This is a UNESCO heritage site and there is a manuscript museum here where you can view different examples of calligraphy – scholars often make the trip here. While you are here you can go to the nearby city of Tirzet where there is a Muslim cemetery.
