Martinique Car Hire & Travel Information

Martinique

A trip to Martinique means that there are plenty of attractions to go and see.  From the historical attractions to the cultural events, the island really does have something for everyone.

The original habitants of the island were the Arawak and Carib Indians and there is a museum dedicated to their history.  The Musée Départemental has been created in one of the colonial buildings and it is a great place to learn more about the origins of the island.

The beaches and waters of the island are a big attraction for visitors.  Head to Pointe du Bout for the main resorts.  The areas around Sainte-Anne and Le Diamant are considered to have the best beaches and bathing.  The waters around the island are also filled with shipwrecks and if you are not a diving enthusiast consider a trip on one of the glass-bottomed boats or the special submarines in the harbour where all but one ship sank on the day that the volcano erupted.

The Cathedral of St-Louis is a major feature of the skyline in Fort-de-France and is a Gothic-inspired structure.  Many of the former governors of the island are buried at the cathedral.  You can also take a trip to the old city of St Pierre, which was destroyed by the volcanic eruption at the beginning of the 20th century.  The ruins of the city have become a popular tourist attraction, with some of the buildings undergoing restoration.

Car hire will help you to explore the island fully and a trip to one of the plantations at Le Carbet is a must.  Columbus landed here early in the 16th century on his 4th voyage.  There is an art gallery in the town that is dedicated to Paul Gauguin but the main attractions are the plantations, some of which have accommodation for visitors.

Car rental is not the only way to get around Martinique.  Many visitors will take the time to go horse riding and it is a great way to see the island at a much more leisurely pace.  There are also great hiking trails for exploring away from the main towns and there are facilities for those who want to go climbing and mountain biking.

Nobody should leave Martinique without trying the island’s rum!  There are distilleries all over the island and visitors are welcome to all of them.  You can sample the product and then pick up a bottle or two to take home with you.
