Madagascar Car Hire & Travel Information

Madagasca

There are some traditional tourist attractions on Madagascar for those who want to go sight-seeing.  Head to the capital city to visit the Queen’s Palace.  Built on the highest point of the city, it had to be partially rebuilt around 20 years ago after a fire.  You can tour the compound and learn more about the history of the royal family here.

The former capital city of Ambohimanga is one of the most sacred sites in the country.  The compound is now listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO

In Antsirabe you can see some of the locally-made crafts.  There are artisanal workshops there so you can find toys that have been made from recycled items, polished gems, embroidered items, raffia items, silk scarves and wooden sculpture.

Make the most of your hire car in Madagascar to visit the Sahambavy Estate.  This is a tea-producing estate.  Primarily for green tea, it has only been producing black tea for just over ten years. You can take a guided tour of the factory then enjoy a tea tasting afterwards.

If you are interested in the flora of the island then a trip to the Arboretum d’Antosokay is a must.  There are more than 900 different species of plant here and you can learn about how they are used for medicines, food and other uses.  If you want to spend more time here you can rent a bungalow for a short stay.

Traditional beach holidays are not off the agenda in Madagascar.  Libanona Beach is very popular with surfers and it is idea for the beginner surfer.  Other surfers head for beaches at Anakao and Lavanono.  Anakao is a fishing village that is fairly isolated so you may feel that car hire is your best option for getting around.  You can take a canoe trip while you are here to explore islands that are nearby as well as the mangroves.  It is also a good base for a day trip to Tsimanampetsotsa National Park where there is a salt lake.

Another national park that is worthy of a trip is the Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park.  It is a very striking place, filled with canyons, lakes and forests, but the limestone karsts are particularly eye-catching and help to create a very unique landscape here.  Alternatively take a trip to Lake Itasy where there are waterfalls and geysers – but brace yourself as the noise can be deafening!
