Kuwait
When you visit Kuwait you will find that traditional tourist attractions are few and far between. However, there are a few things that you should definitely consider adding to your schedule.
A trip to Failakai Island is a must. There are regular ferry services to the island and it is a pretty port. It is the ideal place to see the traditional dhows, but the city is also home to a number of archaeological sites that date back to the Bronze Age and the ancient Greeks. The island’s Greek temple is one of the most popular attractions here. Al Jahrah is the site of manufacture of the traditional boums and sambouk boats. However they no longer used for pearl fishing or trading but simply as pleasure craft.
The capital of Kuwait City has become a very busy city of modern skyscrapers and luxury hotels and apartments, but there are also a number of pretty parks and gardens that you can visit. The Kuwait Towers are one of the most distinctive landmarks in the city but you should also consider a trip to the Seif Palace that dates back to the end of the 19th century. In the palace the original mosaics remain but they were damaged when the Iraqis invaded. You could also visit the National Museum but many artefacts were also removed from here during the invasion.
Opt for car rental to tour the city and see the main attractions. Many visitors want to see attractions such as the Sadu House, which has been created using gypsum and coral. This is now a museum designed to showcase the traditional crafts of the Bedouin people. The centre of the city is home to the Grand Mosque which is also a must for tourists. Kuwait City is also home to one of the world’s largest telecommunications towers, named Liberation Tower to commemorate the liberation of the country. You can go up the tower almost 500ft to enjoy a meal in the restaurant or view the city from the revolving observation tower.
A number of tourists make the most of the location to take part in some water sports. Sailing and scuba diving are both popular here and powerboating is also an option. During the winter months many locals take the opportunity to go horse riding. Take your hire car and spend the day at one of the sea clubs. These have a lot of facilities including swimming pools, tennis courts, beaches, gymnasiums and bowling.
