When you visit Denmark make sure that you enjoy some of the local cuisine. Fish is a large part of the national diet and there are plenty of speciality fish restaurants to try, no matter which part of the country you are in.
Copenhagen is home to several restaurants that have been recognised with a Michelin star or another accolade. However, haute cuisine is not all that is on offer and if you are in a hurry there are fast-food outlets that you can try. Sausage stalls are another Danish tradition. These are referred to as pølser and you can also purchase a soft drink or a beer from them.
Make good use of car rental services to explore the region to find the best restaurants where you can enjoy foods such as Smørrebrød, traditionally eaten at lunchtime. This is dark bread, buttered and served with either fish, sliced meat or cheese. Buffet lunches are also popular in Danish restaurants and you can expect to find a range of cheeses, fish, meats and different hot dishes to choose from.
When it comes to alcohol there are no licensing hours in Denmark so you can pick up a drink at almost any time. There are several varieties of Danish beer with most people recognising the brand names of Carlsberg and Tuborg. However, there are some speciality beers that are worth trying with some smaller breweries open for a visit. Just note that the legal drinking age in Denmark is 18 and you cannot drink and drive, so avoid alcohol if you have decided on car hire as your mode of transport. If you prefer coffee then be aware that in Scandinavian countries it is common for it to be drunk strong and black.
If you have special dietary requirements then it is worth knowing that the Danish Hotel and Restaurant Association has a signage system that indicates when restaurants have special meals for diabetics.
While you are travelling around the country you should not worry about tipping in hotels and restaurants as the prices you are given are fully inclusive so the staff are not expecting you to leave extra.
You may also notice while you are visiting the country that even though the official language is Danish, many residents also have a good command of English, as well as German and French. This makes communicating much easier during your stay but it is still worth learning a few phrases in Danish.
