Putting together an itinerary for a trip to Costa Rica can be a little difficult because there is so much to choose from. Here are a few activities and sights that you might want to consider during your stay.
Head to Santa Elena, a small town next to the Monteverde Cloud Forest. Many people base themselves here if they are planning forest activities, including the ever-popular canopy walking. The forest has a series of platforms and rope bridges based high above the ground from which you can enjoy amazing views.
A trip to the capital city of San Jose is also a good idea, particularly if you enjoy cultural attractions. Arrange car rental from one of the city’s outlets and fill your days here with trips to museums like the National Museum or the Museum of Pre-Colombian Gold, or visit the Teatro Nacional or the Metropolitan Cathedral.
A trip to Costa Rica would not be complete without a day or two spent soaking up the sun on one of the many beaches. If you want secluded beaches then the Osa Peninsula should be your destination. It can be difficult to get there overland but if you make the effort then it is worth it. Widely considered to be one of the most beautiful parts of the country, more than half of the various wildlife species can be found here. The beaches lead on to dense rainforest but as many people don’t make the effort to come to this part of the country, you will have plenty of sunny, sandy spots to choose from.
If you want to find out more about the history of the country and its indigenous people then make the most of your Costa Rica car hire to visit the Northern Lowlands where you can spend some time at the Centro Neotropico Sarapiqui museum – dedicated to the history of the various indigenous cultures. You can also spend some time in the rainforest surrounding the town.
Cruise trips to the islands just offshore are popular with tourists and one of the best is considered to be the catamaran trip to Isla Tortuga. Beautiful sandy beaches and crystal clear waters are just two of the attractions for a day here. Alternatively stay on the mainland and enjoy a twilight trip to the shore to see a variety of turtle species laying eggs in the sands but you have to time your trip right for this one, so visit between March and October.
