It is usual when you are on holiday to want to pick up a souvenir or two but with a country like Cameroon, which does not really cater to tourists, what should you expect when you are out shopping?
Some of the best souvenirs from Cameroon are the local handcrafts. You can head for one of the craft markets and pick up decorated pots, jugs, bottles, cups, pottery, wooden carvings, mats and rugs, jewellery and ethnic clothing. These are generally found in the larger towns and in the few areas that have started to attract tourists.
However, you do need to be a bit careful when you are shopping. There will be stall holders that want to sell you an ‘antique’ item, but this may not necessarily be an antique. In most cases it is just an item that has been distressed so that it looks older. If you do pick up a genuine antique you need to be aware that you cannot simply take it out of the country and you have to get permission from the Delegation Provinciale de Tourisme.
If you opt for car rental in Cameroon you can head out to one of the towns or villages that are not on the tourist trail and pick up cheaper clothes and household items rather than crafts but these are good places to pick up the brightly printed African cotton fabric. In most places the shopping hours are from Monday to Saturday from 7.30 am to 6 pm and it is very rare that you will find a shop that is open on a Sunday.
You might also be wondering if Cameroon has any nightlife to speak of. If you want to try a few nightclubs or casinos you need to be in either Douala or Yaoundé. Some are located in hotels but there are also a few independent venues for you to try. In addition there are a few top restaurants in both cities and these are popular with expats.
However, Cameroon is also home to plenty of fairly basic bars and clubs and if you rent a car you can explore a little further outside the main cities, many of which host live music at the weekend. Bars will stay open for as long as there is somebody there who wants to buy a drink because there are no restrictions on licensing hours so you really can party all night if you want to!
