Bonaire Car Hire & Travel Information

As Bonaire has largely avoided mass tourism, you might be concerned that there is not a lot for you to see and do during your stay.  However, the opposite is true.  There are many great features and events on the island so you should easily be able to stay busy while you are here.

A trip to the retired donkey sanctuary is a must for many visitors.  Most used to be working animals on the island’s farms but were retired when new technology came along to replace them.  The sanctuary is a not-for-profit organisation and relies on donations from visitors, who can come along and help to feed and care for them too.

The National Marine Park is perfect for those who don’t mind getting their feet wet.  This focuses on the coral reef and is a very unspoiled area.  Marine biologists are in charge of maintaining the area, which is popular with snorkelers and divers.

There is a whole calendar of festivals on Bonaire, one of which is the main Carnival, but there are plenty of others including the Simadan Festival and Rincon Day.  Many of these feature music and dancing and it is a great opportunity to let your hair down.

Make the most of your rental car and head off to spend the day on Pink Beach.  There are tiny bits of crushed coral in the sand that help to give it a pink tinge, a colour that is very obvious as the sand catches the light when the sun goes down.  Be warned though, there is a real lack of tourist facilities here so you need to make sure that you take everything with you.

The oldest village on the island is Rincon and it is well worth a trip here.  If you have decided on a rental car then getting here is easy but it is also very tempting to indulge with a chilled beverage at one of the bars, so be careful!  This town is located in the north of the island and it is a great place to mingle with the locals and find out more about the history of the region.  You can also explore the island’s history with a trip to the Bonaire Museum.  Located in a resorted plantation mansion dating back to 1885, there are artefacts that date back to the time of the Caiquetio Indians, the Spanish invaders and the Dutch colonists. is part of Ecommerce Group NV., which offers a range of Ecommerce services.
