Barbados
Your trip to Barbados should never be with a day or two (at least!) spent in Bridgetown. This is where you can get a real sense of the colonial history of the island. Go and see the statue of Lord Nelson in National Heroes Square and the Parliament Buildings. The town is also filled with rum shops and you can end a day of sightseeing with a relaxing drink at one of the many bars that overlooks the marina.
If you want to find a locally-made souvenir to take home then a trip to the Chalky Mount Potteries should feature on your itinerary. The art produced here is not expensive but the quality is high. You can take some time to watch the potters working then browse the items for sale. The potteries are easy to reach if you have opted for Barbados car hire.
Tourists flock to St Nicholas Abbey, a Jacobean building is ornate and well-kept. Other examples of colonial architecture that are worth a look include the George Washington House and Museum, which has been restored. There is also the former home of the island’s first premier, Sir Grantley Adams. The house is called Tyrol Cot and was built in the mid-19th century. The island’s National Trust has restored the property so visitors can get a taste of what life was like then and there are parking facilities for those who have a rental car.
Wherever you go on the island it would be hard to miss the fact that cricket is something of a national obsession. There will be opportunities for you to watch a local friendly match and there are plenty of different grounds and clubs all over the island. You can while away an afternoon watching this most English of games.
Diving enthusiasts will find that there are enough dive sites to keep them busy during their stay. Head for the west coast of the island where the waters are a little calmer. Carlisle Bay is famous for its shipwrecks – there are reported to be more than 200 here.
Nature enthusiasts should not miss the Barbados Wildlife Reserve. There is a beautiful mahogany forest here and animals that have made it their home include tortoises, monkeys, raccoons and otters. Alternatively there is the rainforest at Walkes Spring where you can take part in some adventure activities such as ziplining or simply enjoy the amazing scenery.
